Protests grow across the U.S. as people push against Trump's mass deportation policies

(NPR) "ICE out of New York!" Those were the words thousands of people chanted near the city's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office, and throughout the streets of Manhattan Tuesday night as part of a series of nationwide rallies against President Trump's immigration sweeps and the deployment of the U.S. military in California. "There are many voices in my community that can't be here today out of fear of what the administration is doing, so I want to be here for them," 19-year-old Jeanet told NPR as she joined hundreds of other protesters in lower Manhattan Tuesday night.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom addresses the American public, warning of an assault on democracy

(Scripps) California Gov. Gavin Newsom addressed the public on Tuesday evening, criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump for his response to the anti-ICE protests centered on Los Angeles and warning that the events in California may repeat elsewhere in the country. "This isn't just about protests here in Los Angeles. When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation. This is about all of us. This is about you. California may be first, but it clearly will not end here. Other states are next. Democracy is next. Democracy is under assault before our eyes. This moment we have feared has arrived."

Republicans warn Trump that some deportations go too far

(Axios) Some GOP lawmakers are starting to warn the Trump administration to reconsider its all-in deportation push. Republicans are convinced they have a clear mandate to kick out hardened criminals and gang members. But differences are emerging on how aggressively ICE should deport workers, longtime residents and some people who've sought refuge from brutal regimes. Today's dissent is far from a GOP rebuke of Trump. But the outlines of a serious debate are taking shape.

Stephen Miller meeting with ICE officials was the spark for LA protests and National Guard call-up: report

(The Independent) White House aide Stephen Miller has repeatedly branded the Los Angeles protests an “insurrection” after fierce backlash to immigration raids. California’s leadership is now “siding with insurrectionist mobs,” and Democratic officials are “in open rebellion” against the government, according to Miller. But the far-right architect of Donald Trump’s anti-immigration agenda appears to have himself lit the fuse, after reportedly rallying Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to “just go out there and arrest illegal aliens.”

(Axios) Current and former employees of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are calling on Health Secretary Robert F.
