Republicans warn Trump that some deportations go too far

Source: Axios

Some GOP lawmakers are starting to warn the Trump administration to reconsider its all-in deportation push.

Why it matters: Republicans are convinced they have a clear mandate to kick out hardened criminals and gang members. But differences are emerging on how aggressively ICE should deport workers, longtime residents and some people who've sought refuge from brutal regimes.

  • The White House wants ICE to arrest 3,000 people a day, and dramatically boost their deportation numbers.
  • That could lead to more workplace raids.

  • Zoom in: Today's dissent is far from a GOP rebuke of Trump. But the outlines of a serious debate are taking shape.

  • Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.) is urging Trump officials to "prioritize the removal of known criminals over the hardworking people who have lived peacefully in the Valley for years."
  • Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) is worried about deporting people "that have been here for a while. There's some talk of jobs, etc., and also disrupting parts of the economy. We need to work something else out for those," he told us.
  • Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) told CNN: "I think a big part of that is we all need to focus on convicted criminal, illegal aliens" instead of farm laborers.
  • Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) told us: "I think there are some legitimate folks who have potential legitimate claims that if you send them back to a regime like Cuba or Nicaragua or potentially North Korea … we might be sending them to a situation where we frankly just don't want to do that."

  • The other side: Some of the most vulnerable House Republicans said they have few qualms about the way Trump's deportation campaign is being carried out.

But repigs have been doing that quite frequently since ronald "the clown" rayguns. Then march some pathetic, lying sap like Oliver North in front of a Congressional hearing and play the media like a fiddle. So easy to sway the typical stupid American voter.

How to spot a psychopath needs to be a prerequisite for serving in any government position.

They need to be worried about pissing off their leader because they very well could be the next in line for deportation.

These fools are pitiful representations of vertebrates.

Has Susan Collins furrowed her brow yet? Maybe they could borrow one of Chuck Schumer's strongly worded letters.

Trumpists (they're not Republicans anymore) are gutless...they will do nothing to stop him. They see him as the path to what their goal has been since at least Bush...a permanent Republican majority. They've chosen to ignore the adage about what happens when you try to ride the tiger. Trump will destroy the party, and they deserve it.

To me, Axios is a fraud.
Axios just repeats the predictable "both sides have fair points" reporting style of the MSM that preceded it.
Mike Allen is a founder and/or major principal and/or exec editor.
His appearances on Morning Joe were never very insightful pre-election (I won't watch MJ since J&M kissed TACO's ring).
He managed to point out the obviousness really well, every time, though!
    Yawn / Go Away, Axios.

    Wed Jun 11, 2025, 07:17 PM

There was an assumption with DOGE (in Elon’s Ketamine soaked brain) that there was corruption and fraud. Turns out that really was not true— and that comes from at least one person that worked for DOGE.

There’s a similar assumption here. That there are just thousands and thousands (or in Trump’s fevered mind millions and millions) of hardened criminals that are living among us. Well, I’m sure that there are some hardened criminals but I would venture to guess that the numbers are pretty damn low.

If they continue down this path (and I seen no reason to believe that they won’t) this is going to cause an amount of damage to the economy that is almost incalculable. They’re going to be fucking with the absolute foundation of the economy.

There are a lot of jobs in this country that nobody really wants to do. Even the people that do them don’t want to do them. But we have enough people in this country, and many of them are here without any sort of papers, that are in the position where they have to do them. If we deport them the jobs literally will not get done.

If these jobs don’t get done in many cases we’re talking about food literally not being on people’s tables. And this includes people like me who right now have no trouble affording food. But if it’s not at the grocery store I’m pretty well screwed. I don’t own a farm and I have no livestock. If you shove a stick in the spokes of the food economy and the truck stop showing up— I’ll be one of the first to starve. So will these dumb motherfuckers in the Republican Party that thought this was a great idea when Trump started shooting his mouth off back in 2015 and before.

It will impact the entire food supply chain - notably the harvesting of produce that is not only used for fresh eating but also for processed foods. And it will impact the meat and fish industry - both of which also prepare those products for consumers and for other food processors to use in their food manufacturing.

We saw a hint at what could happen when many of those same workers that are being rounded up, were getting sick with COVID due to the lack of PPE, social distancing, etc., in their workplaces and that meant shortages.

I remember when I could not find a bag of chicken wings for almost a year.

Nearly 90% of big US meat plants had COVID-19 cases in pandemic’s first year - data

    By Leah Douglas
January 14, 2022 1:50 PM EST Updated 3 years ago

    (snip)

Data from meatpackers Tyson Foods (TSN.N), JBS, Cargill, Smithfield Foods and National Beef made public in October showed 59,000 cases of COVID-19 and 269 deaths among their workers between March 2020 and Feb. 1 2021. Both figures were around three times higher than previous estimates.

    (snip)

This was the disruption with sickened workers and those who died. Many of them are immigrants on work permits and others without paperwork, who were supplied by some shady "3rd party" labor companies. And in some facilities, they had their children working in those plants "under the table" as it were.

Now remove them all and the supply chain is severed.

Well, that's nice. If you were so fucking concerned, maybe you could have leveraged that into action when you voted on the Big Turd Bill, since it only passed by one vote.

But no. You clicked your heels and voted as King Shit ordered you to, and now you're whining.
