I was reluctant at first because I figured it was just another gangster show and I am a little put off by Cillian Murphy's creepy eyes but the production values and historical detail are amazing, and Murphy's performance is superb. But the best thing is the writing. The dialogue is carefully written and fresh, and I love the interweaving of Anglo-Irish relations, class and labor tensions and Roma culture. The best performances are Murphy, Helen McCrory and Tom Hardy but all the acting is top drawer with the single glaring exception of Adrien Brody as an annoying mafioso caricature. I think my favorite character is Curly: "Tommy, I don't think that's flour in those bags." Later on, Tommy says that Curly is a lot smarter than he appears, and we already knew that.
