I was Class of 1963 at West Chester High (now called "Henderson" for some reason) and never heard about Rustin while I was there. We were told that our famous graduate was Samuel Barber and that he had written the Alma Mater, though he vehemently denied it.

I'm glad that the school district had the sense to recognize him, albeit some 19 years after he died. We owe a lot of people profound apologies, starting with Alan Turing and Bayard Rustin.

When they built a new high school in our town in Virginia, I recommended naming it for Rustin or Stephen Hawking. They choose "Battlefield."
