In addition to its 204,800 unemployed residents in 2014, Massachusetts had another 164,300 individuals last year who were working part-time because they were unable to find full-time work, according to federal data released on Tuesday.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the "involuntary part-time" group encompasses people who worked part-time "because of slack work or business conditions, or because they were unable to find a full-time job." The group included 7.2 million individuals nationwide in 2014.

The federal government also categorizes "discouraged workers," or people not currently looking for work because they believe no jobs are available. The bureau said there were 13,500 discouraged workers in Massachusetts last year.

The bureau said its the broadest measure of "labor underutilization," which includes the unemployed, workers employed part-time for economic reasons, and those marginally attached to the labor force, was 11.5 percent in Massachusetts last year, down from 13.2 percent in 2013. Nationally, the comparable rate averaged 12 percent in 2014.
