Deerhead owner defends viral Facebook post saying 'free money' prevents hiring [View all]

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Chuck Johnson said he didn't mean to offend anyone.

The owner of Deerhead Sidewalk Cafe & Bar went to Facebook Sunday to inform customers that he's closing on Sundays at least through Labor Day due a lack of staffing.

Had Johnson's statement ended there, it likely would not have gone viral, with hundreds of angry responses. Instead, the Facebook post continued:

"We will be closed on Sundays until further notice, or when they stop getting free money and have to work again. Sorry for the inconvenience."

The post came with a photo of the late actor John Candy's security officer character in "National Lampoon's Vacation," signaling stop.
