In reply to the discussion: New Trump move to etch his face on $1 coin hits snag as critics note he'd have to be dead [View all]RazorbackExpat
(717 posts)68. Commemorative coins issued by the US Mint are indeed, legal tender
Any coin produced by any US Mint, since the first Cent was produced at Philadelphia in 1793, is technically legal tender (exceptions are coins produced for foreign entities, such as the Philippine and Panama issues). Most modern commemorative coins do not circulate because their issue price or precious metal price is far above their face value. For example, the gold San Francisco Old Mint coin of 2006 has a face value of $5, but the gold in it is worth around $900. But the 4 half dollar coins I mentioned actually circulated at one time.

They got rid of the penny to save minting costs, now they want to make a $1 coin that nobody wants?

When I was a checker at a grocery store I used to buy all the silver dollars & Kennedy half dollars that I came across.

There have actually been 5 people depicted on US coins while they were still alive

But the real story is that WE DON'T WANT HIM on any coin, whether he's alive or dead is irrelevant

I'd actually love to see Trump's image on coins, as long as they as inscribed with "Never Forget. Never Again."
