Healthy diabetic snack ideas.

My husband is 72 and has been using insulin for a year and a half. We would appreciate it if you more experienced folks would share your diabetic snack ideas. Thanks!

popcorn. A snack should be 15 or 20 carbs. 3 cups of popcorn is 15 carbs. Get a carb count app. Read books. Learn. I’m diabetic for 27 years. You can do this!!!

A carb app! That had not occurred to me! Neither had popcorn … we have so much to learn. Thank you for the encouragement.

That's the way I view most of the packaged diabetic treats. Cruise the internet for ideas on making your own. The very best snacks are veggies like celery or carrot sticks. Anything with fiber andow carbs.

We’re willing to make our own, but many recipes call for odd ingredients that we can’t get locally. I agree with you that veggies make great munchies!

Am hypoglycemic 40 years now. So not diabetic, but believe recommended diet is same or similar.
I am the snack queen, lol.
Generally, it’s nuts, almonds, cashews, peanuts. Hazelnuts are a fav-get roasted ones off Amazon.
String cheese or baby bells. Sometimes with crackers.
Baby carrots, radishes. Been buying radishes every week bc they are less than 1$ a bag.
Zone Perfect bars in chocolate almond flavor are great. Kinda pricey tho.
V8 juice usually makes me feel like I’ve eaten something.
Cucumber & cottage cheese.
Luv any kind of olives, so Greek, lg Spanish, whatever I can find, olive bars are the best.
Hope that helps!

Any dried, baked low glycemic veggie (most are) can turn into a chip.

They gotta be thin and dry. Macadamia nut oil is good if you can find it, good Non Italian organic EVOO is second best.

Soft and tender would be our choice too, since we’re both old and our teeth have seen better days. Thank you for this unique suggestion.

FDA recently allowed a limited claim that yogurt reduces the risk of Type II diabetes. Maybe it’s among the Ok snack foods for people who are already diabetic, It’s worth considering. There’s lots of info online, and there’s a vast number of brands and types, some with little sugar and limited carbs. There are high protein options that are tasty and quite satisfying. Plus you can add keto granola with lots of seeds and nuts for extra yummies.

19. Dannon's Light + Fit and Oikos' Triple Zero are both solid options

Dannon's Light + Fit is cheaper and has more flavor options. Before switching from multiple daily injections to an insulin pump, they were among my go-to snacks because I could eat two containers without taking insulin (8 grams of carbohydrates each).

I switched to Oikos Triple Zero because it has a higher protein content and I just need vanilla to serve as the base for a pre-gym meal. My mix ins aren't terrible on carbs, but they definitely aren't keto either.

As an aside, fruit and cheese also makes a good snack. About a cup of fresh fruit and one or two pieces of string cheese was another one of my go-to snacks. String cheese has marginal carbohydrates and a many fruits won't break the 15 gram recommendation if kept to a cup or less. Strawberries and grapes are two options.

It’s nice when you don’t have to go out of your way to find the foods you want. Grapes and string cheese sound really good too. Thanks!

That's celery sticks with peanut butter in the "groove." Ants are raisins and sometimes I put a few on for aesthetics
Olives and aged gouda
Mixed nuts (Roasted and salted from Whole Foods)
A half cup of mixed berries
Cream cheese on sourdough WASA bread

I'm prediabetic A1C of 6.2 with a family history of diabetes. BMI of 26.1

I need more ideas for snacks!

all kinds of foods and snacks.
Instead of chips and salsa, I buy a head of cabbage and cut a chunk of it into triangles, and use that as chips for salsa. Pretty darn good! Also celery and hummus, or half an apple with peanut butter. A really great breakfast is savory oatmeal - make oatmeal with chicken stock instead of milk, then top with all kinds of savory toppings. My fave is sautéed spinach and mushrooms, diced tomato, chopped boiled eggs and feta cheese. Google savory oatmeal for loads of recipe ideas! For tacos, I sub a whole romaine leaf for the shell. And lastly, for something sweet, I will substitute a homemade meal replacement protein smoothie for a meal - filling, diabetic friendly and satisfies the sweet tooth. 1c oat milk, 1c water, 1/2 c Greek yogurt, one scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 tbsp flax seed, and approx 2/3 cup frozen strawberries and bananas. Blend it up and YUM! There’s also a ton of smoothie recipes for diabetics. OH and my favorite snack is SUPER easy. I know you said he doesn’t like yogurt, but this is just like chocolate mousse. Greek yogurt, Hershey’s Cocoa powder, and either honey or real maple syrup - you’ll have to play with the amounts to find the right taste to jus liking, mix well and it is wonderful!

and I am going to use some of them myself. The only addition I would offer is ham and cheese roll ups. Deli slices of ham and the pre-sliced hard cheeses. I like the black forest ham with colby jack slices rolled together. Very low carb and I find it filling.

Good luck!
