That's plausible. But so is the Weather People are hyping the last winter storm for ratings bucolic_frolic Sunday #4
Well, yes, but I have my own theory about the risk/reward schema for Meteorology. GopherGal Sunday #5

Something is happening that they're not picking up on.

Did Trump use his Sharpie?

UPDATE: 1:40PM See? Now they've dropped the total range, it was 16 to 26" now it's 11 to 16". We are making progress!

I believe they mentioned that the NHL players at the Olympics were scheduled to return via New York, but have been re-routed via Miami because of the storm. My tinfoil-hat conspiracy theory is that he Sharpied the storm track to make them come to Merde-a-Lardo.

They love these late winter storms. Last boost to the bottom line until hurricane season in September.

that doesn't involve much in the way of financial/commercial incentive.

I think their risk/reward is something like:
Predict 6 inches, but actually get 12 = REALLY BAD, as in "you'll never live it down"
Predict 12 inches, but actually get 6 = NOT GOOD, but you can live it down.
So they have a strong aversion to possible under-prediction of snow totals.

For years after the infamous Minnesota "Halloween Blizzard" in 1991, where 12 inches was predicted and 28 inches was received, the TV meteorologists were way over-predicting snowfalls.
