As I watch the introduction of the balls and strikes challenge system into

MLB I am reminded of this story.

One night when Nolan Ryan was really bringing it the umpire called a pitch a strike. The indignant batter stepped out and yelled at the Ump saying, are you crazy that ball SOUNDED outside.

He said that it appeared to him the ball was breaking up into fragments when it got near the plate. The doctor told him his eyes were having trouble picking the pitch up as it got closer, and his eye line shifted, and it resulted in that optical illusion.
