General Motors Toledo Propulsion Systems scaling back electric vehicle part production, increasing non-EV transmissions

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Big changes are coming to General Motors Toledo Propulsion Systems, and what kind of parts the employees make. “This isn’t tariff-related, it’s market demand,” said Tony Totty, the president of United Auto Workers Local 14.

Totty said right now, consumers want heavy-duty trucks and General Motors is looking to fill that need. According to an internal memo sent to employees, GM leadership announced an increase in internal combustion engine (ICE) production at the Toledo facility. Totty said these are parts largely used for heavy-duty trucks.

According to the internal memo sent out this week, the internal memo said the facility will still produce EV parts, but will remove some equipment and one production line to make space for ICE transmissions. Totty said these are parts for some of GM’s most popular products.

“The demand for EV is too soft for us to turn the switch on our operation,” Totty said.
