survive the night
life has survived the night the chest rising and falling
although the eyes are still shut the cracked lips silent
outside the sun shines bright and the birds are calling
within remains only a will and the moments are pliant
the twisted bedclothes drape mimic a winding shroud
now counting heartbeats measuring the flow of blood
caught in prisons of no escape lost in a human crowd
as prayers to gods entreat while awaiting a final flood
holding to the cold wet hand in a hard surprising grip
afraid to let go or leave to find love forgot to breathe
cursing the eternally damned drinking the sugary drip
nothing left to know or believe still the storms seethe
once more the night arrives and time to take a watch
question the value of lives and time tightens the notch
