The Illusion of Spring

Winter releases its icy talons
Slowly, its grip loosens
As the days become longer
A few minutes each day
Until Night and Day are equal
But we are not there yet.

The trees have begun to bud
Baby leaves peek from the branches
Of this winter’s skeletal trees
Each day warmer than normal
Tricks them into early birth
A decoy, ready for a freeze

Grass has started to green
Children playing outdoors
In short sleeves, no jackets
Riding bikes on the cul-de-sac
Laughter in the air outside
Will vanish soon with Winter’s revenge

--

Winter still reigns for now
Reluctant to surrender the throne
Optimism gives way to doom
Each offering rescinded
Each small warmth blasted by cold
The icy winds always return

An illusion of Spring
Anticipated in hope
Of new beauty not seen
For so long.
Now we wait for all ice to melt
So we can see the world again
In Peace, Hope, and Love
When the Evil of our Winter is no more.

Let the Spring finally be real.
