In Washington state, if you have a concealed carry permit, the waiting period is waved.
If not, the official waiting period is a week. But many shops draw that out to 2 weeks.

Seriously though it isn’t difficult if you have a clean background. Fill out a form, wait while the dealer calls to get a NICS check, pay for the purchase. I have seen the process take as little as fifteen minutes. It can be longer but less than an hour assuming the purchase is approved.
Whether you are allowed to take the gun home at that point or have to wait depends on local regulations.

I bought a Glock 17 a few weeks ago.
It took about an hour and a half with all the paperwork. Then a 10 day waiting period. And then more paperwork to pick it up.

They can't sell anything newer than that, and they are trying to ban them.

Hell, never had a pistol that wasn't a revolver before. Always wheelguns.

Assuming you are not focusing on ease of convincing your spouse to let you get another gun. ( pro tip: tell them that you are taking your gun to the shop to have some work done on it, but carry an empty case. Bring back the new gun in the old case, bada bing, bada boom. )

If you are buying retail, you go to a LGS or any shop that has a FFL. Fill out form 4473 ( don't commit perjury, they take a dim view on that, sometimes. ) and they will run a back ground check, NICS, and if it comes back clean, you have satisfied the Federal requirements. Then you have state and local laws to follow, but that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish.

From personal experience in one of the few parts of Florida worth living in...
I had ordered a lever action through Academy. From walking to the counter, to walking to the front to pay, it was maybe 20 minutes. While I was standing at the counter waiting on them to bring it from the stock room, I saw a single action revolver in the case, same caliber. I thought "Hey, why not, I may want to shoot a 'cowboy' match some day, so filled out the "paper work" (actually Ipad, it was all done electronically.) and got both done under the same background check.
Have my CCL so no 5 day wait (another reason to renew it when it come up, even though Florida changed who could legally carry concealed. ) Settled up, walked out to the truck, and was on my merry way.

If you are buying private seller, the situation is a bit less formal than what is listed above. The code is, well, it is...

I was in a discussion about various things with two younger women, who both jumped on my statement 'you can buy a gun and take it home the same day' by telling me (we are related) in a loving way that I was full of shit. But I swear this has been repeated several times so I said it and assumed it was true. What I get from everyones comments it I can buy it today, but not take it home, unless I already have a CWP. Is that accurate?
Thanks!

State and local laws do apply, though. You would do well to check to see what applies in your specific circumstances.

Florida allows for that, I am sure California does not. And of course, "everything is illegal in Massachusetts".

https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2019/0790.0655
790.0655 Purchase and delivery of firearms; mandatory waiting period; exceptions; penalties.—

(1)(a) A mandatory waiting period is imposed between the purchase and delivery of a firearm. The mandatory waiting period is 3 days, excluding weekends and legal holidays, or expires upon the completion of the records checks required under s. 790.065, whichever occurs later. “Purchase” means the transfer of money or other valuable consideration to the retailer. “Retailer” means and includes a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer engaged in the business of making firearm sales at retail or for distribution, or use, or consumption, or storage to be used or consumed in this state, as defined in s. 212.02(13).
(b) Records of firearm sales must be available for inspection by any law enforcement agency, as defined in s. 934.02, during normal business hours.

(2) The waiting period does not apply in the following circumstances:
(a) When a firearm is being purchased by a holder of a concealed weapons permit as defined in s. 790.06.
(b) To a trade-in of another firearm.
(c) To the purchase of a rifle or shotgun, upon a person’s successfully completing a minimum of a 16-hour hunter safety course and possessing a hunter safety certification card issued under s. 379.3581. A person who is exempt from the hunter safety course requirements under s. 379.3581 and holds a valid Florida hunting license is exempt from the mandatory waiting period under this section for the purchase of a rifle or shotgun.
(d) When a rifle or shotgun is being purchased by a law enforcement officer or correctional officer, as those terms are defined in s. 943.10(1), (2), (3), (6), (7), (8), or (9), or a servicemember as defined in s. 250.01.

(3) It is a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084:
(a) For any retailer, or any employee or agent of a retailer, to deliver a firearm before the expiration of the waiting period, subject to the exceptions provided in subsection (2).
(b) For a purchaser to obtain delivery of a firearm by fraud, false pretense, or false representation.

And, as you can see, a 3rd degree felony for the seller, and the buyer in Florida if they don't follow state law. There is no Federal/National waiting period. States, cities, well, that's a Glock of a different caliber, er, horse of a different color.

Michigan has no law imposing a waiting period prior to the sale of a firearm.

Last updated December 31, 2023

It does look like y'all have to have some kind of license to purchase a firearm.

*Duck AI response....

Aspect --- Details
Waiting Period --- None
Background Check --- Required for all purchases
License Validity --- 30 days for purchase license
Long Gun Purchase Requirement --- Background check required
Recent Changes --- Universal background checks implemented

Michigan's approach focuses on ensuring background checks are completed without imposing a waiting period, aiming to balance public safety with the rights of gun owners.
