Sign: Justice for gentle capybara brutally beaten by 8 people.

In a deeply troubling incident in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, surveillance footage allegedly shows a harmless male capybara being viciously attacked by eight people wielding sticks and metal bars, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Following the violent beating, the capybara was taken to a wildlife center where a veterinarian determined that he had sustained traumatic brain injury, numerous injuries along his back, as well as swelling and internal bleeding near his left eye.

Known for their gentle, docile nature, the animal reportedly posed no threat -- yet was still deliberately targeted, making the attack all the more disturbing.

While authorities have identified and arrested all eight suspects, it is critical that they face meaningful consequences to reflect the severity of this crime and help deter future acts of cruelty.

Please sign our petition urging the Rio de Janeiro State Public Prosecutor's office to prosecute the individuals responsible to the fullest extent of the law -- including mandating intensive psychological intervention and a ban on having animals.

The courts there ruled that in areas where they're prone to being run over, speed bumps must be installed, they must be moved to approved reserves - and that any attempt to fumigate them (to say nothing of attacking them) is prohibited.

They're protected by court order - much to the chagrin of (largely right-wing) gated community homeowners, though with many exceptions.
