Bluefield election will cost $7,000 but all candidates unopposed

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) - The City of Bluefield will spend about $7,000 to hold the municipal election on June 3, although all three candidates are running unopposed.

City Clerk Anthony Heltzel told city board members during Tuesday’s meeting the expense is an unnecessary one from a practical standpoint since all the incumbents will win, but the state requires the election anyway.

“The money’s used to pay the poll workers, we have to order the ballots, all the filings in the newspapers that we’re required to do by state code, all those things are what go into making up that budget.”

Heltzel also said the city is in the process of recruiting the poll workers.
