Verizon cuts WA jobs as retail strategy shifts

Telecommunications giant Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) is laying off 54 Washington employees.

Verizon disclosed the move in a Thursday Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the state. The layoffs are part of a shift in strategy for Verizon, which is divesting a number of its stores to third-party operators.

According to the WARN, the layoffs will begin Sept. 18. The layoffs affect nine stores across the state and three remote employees. Six of the stores are being divested.

In an emailed statement, a Verizon spokesperson said certain stores nationwide are being sold to partners on Aug. 16, but there won't be any store closures from the move. Most laid-off employees at the divested locations will be offered new roles with the partners, the spokesperson added.
