Man arrested for allegedly trying to murder Lummi Nation officer during traffic stop

A suspect was arrested in connection with the shooting of a Lummi Nation police officer.

A 26-year-old man was arrested in Ferndale around 12 hours after allegedly attempting to murder the officer, Whatcom County Sheriff Donnell Tanksley confirmed during a press conference Monday. The man has a criminal history of drug possession.

A Lummi Nation police officer was shot during a traffic stop for a car that drove into a ditch at 12:52 a.m. Monday, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) reported.

When the officer approached the vehicle, the suspect opened fire and shot the officer multiple times. WCSO noted that the suspect fled the scene on foot.
