Requiring proof of citizenship to vote would disenfranchise Washington State Republican Party Chair Jim Walsh's own vote

Twenty-five years ago last week, the Pacific Northwest launched a nationwide movement to make it easier for Americans to vote when the State of Oregon began automatically delivering ballots to all registered voters for every election. Washington soon began following suit, and today, both states are nationwide leaders in voter turnout and civic engagement, particularly in even-numbered years.

Although this is an accomplishment we all ought to be proud of as a region, vote-at-home is now coming under renewed assault from a right wing campaign called “ENDVBM” — short for End Vote By Mail, another name for voting at home.

The goal of this campaign — which is being marketed under a set of entirely false and offensive pretenses — is to force all voting to be done in person at polling places, and to require all voters to present proof of citizenship when they cast ballots.

Washington State Republican Party Chair Jim Walsh has emerged as a key figure in the effort and is making the campaign a top priority, both personally and organizationally. Walsh recently filed an initiative to the Legislature for 2026 seeking to cancel the registrations of voters who don’t prove their citizenship within a short period of time; evidently, even he realizes how unpopular trying to end vote-at-home would be, so he’s focusing on requiring proof of citizenship in order to participate first.
