Sources close to Mayor Bill Saffo (D) say he will seek re-election

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Sources close to Wilmington mayor Bill Saffo say he will seek another term. The mayor has not made a formal announcement but is expected to do so soon.

Former New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield announced March 3 that he will run for mayor. Barfield said at the time that he considered Saffo a “tremendous” friend and leader and hopes to build on his legacy with a new vision.

Bill Saffo has served as Wilmington’s mayor since December 2006 and is the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history.

The candidate filing period for the 2025 partisan and nonpartisan municipal elections begins at the opening of business on Monday, July 7, 2025, for county boards of elections, and ends at noon on Friday, July 18, 2025, unless otherwise stated in a municipal charter or session law.
