Omaha mayoral race takes national politics, culture war twist in final weeks of race

One argument against moving Omaha's general election to align with the presidential election half a year earlier is that the spring election helps keep the focus on local, not national issues.

The race has certainly remained in the spotlight, but in the final weeks of the 2025 race for Omaha mayor, there's been a national politics and culture war twist.

University of Nebraska Omaha political science professor Randall Adkins says the mailers, ads, and strong efforts on the campaign trail show the campaigns believe it will be a tight race.

On Tuesday, either Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing Jr. (D) will become the first to defeat Mayor Jean Stothert (R), or she will win an unprecedented 16 years as head of the city.
