Spencer (D) topples Jones (D) in St. Louis mayor's race rematch

Alderwoman Cara Spencer was elected mayor of St. Louis in a landslide Tuesday, besting her opponent, Mayor Tishaura Jones, by a ratio of nearly two to one.

The results came in around 9 p.m. Not long after, Spencer took the stage at the Union Station Grand Hall, speaking to an ebullient crowd that one hotel staffer guessed numbered around 400 people

Spencer thanked the hundreds of people who volunteered for her campaign. It was because of them, she said, that turnout increased significantly this time around compared to last month’s primary. (About 16,000 more people did show up to the polls compared to in the primary, with turnout topping 25.6 percent.)

“We did this together,” she said. “Let’s get to work.” She added: “Drink up, everybody. Cheers to St. Louis.”
