Influential Black Slate endorses in Detroit mayoral primary contest
Detroit mayoral candidate Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. has been endorsed by The Black Slate Inc., an organization that says it seeks to promote candidates it believes best represent the interests of the Black community.
Kinloch, the senior pastor of the Detroit-based Triumph Church, is one of nine mayoral candidates on Aug. 5 primary ballot who are trying to succeed Mayor Mike Duggan, a three-term incumbent who is not seeking reelection and is running for Michigan governor as an independent. The two top vote-getters in the primary will advance to November's general election ballot.
"We just thought that for a time such as this, that Reverend Kinloch was the right choice for Detroit," said Kandia Milton, chair of The Black Slate.
"Pastor Kinloch has demonstrated throughout his life his commitment to the citizens of city of Detroit and investing in people," Milton said. The group cited Kinloch and his church's efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the church raised money to buy computer laptops for homebound students as well as provided free funerals to COVID victims.
