Detroit Councilwoman Santiago-Romero battling to have her name on August primary ballot

Wayne County election officials and Detroit City Councilwoman Gabriela Santiago-Romero are in open dispute over whether the incumbent's name will be on the Aug. 5 primary ballot.

As it stands now, county officials say Santiago-Romero's name has been disqualified from the ballot due to an outstanding $250 late filing fee from an October quarterly campaign report.

Both sides Tuesday doubled down on their assertions that the other side is in error.

"It is the responsibility of each candidate or candidate committee to ensure that all required campaign documents are filed timely and any outstanding campaign finance fees are fully paid in accordance with Michigan law," said to an email statement from Dorian Tyus, special assistant to the Wayne County County Clerk.
