Debate commentary from a Mainer on Bluesky

Just watched both heats of the Maine democratic senate debate. Lots of good options. As far as the debate itself, I would say Jackson probably did best in the first heat, and Kleban best in the second heat. Lizzy Dickerson had the best regular person energy.

The first heat was definitely stronger.

The emptiness of the room was jarring at first, and Bellows started a little flat, while some of the men seemed to be weirdly shouting at no-one.

The debate improved as it went along. I'd be satisfied with any of these candidates.

Jackson had a simple thesis and conviction.

Bellows and Wood made good smart points.

Shah is really good at making complex arguments. He must have practiced, because he hit the ground running well. His anger seemed like a performance, but rehearsed.

Bellows was flat-footed but up front about it.

Kleban and Dickerson had the standout performances in the 2nd round.

Kleban spoke well with conviction

Lizzy Dickerson just seemed like a well-grounded regular person (which I would absolutely take over Collins!)

Costello is a weak candidate, but would be a good Senator.

I can't make it to either the county meeting or the convention, but if I had a ranked ballot it would go:

1. Bellows
2. Jackson
3. Kleban
4. Shah
5. Wood
6. Dickerson
7. Costello

This was better commentary than what I've read in the major media. I'm sure Maine reporters have good analysis, too.

I didn't want to inundate this guy with heavy traffic by directly linking to his posts but he goes by Charlie @reanderthal on Bluesky

Via phone or internet too! Still time to register.

I am going to the meeting in person because I can and it will be a nice day for a little drive.

There are preliminary training sessions online too, I will be attending one soon.

The options are in person,by phone or internet/computer.

I'm sure some older folks and those with disabilities greatly appreciate that.

Are on top of it working to make this work out for everyone. They called me to confirm my participation as well as email and text. They even give you opt out points along the way in case you change your mind.

I'm liking the process so far.
