“She voted to advance this bill because she supported it,” said Sen. Mike Tipping of Orono. Tipping was referring to a comment that Collins made to Maine Public Radio, saying she almost always supports motions to proceed when a bill is brought forward by the Senate majority leader — a justification she used for her procedural vote on the budget bill. Yet, Tipping pointed to a string of major Democratic-led bills that Collins voted against advancing, including the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the American Rescue Plan, and the Inflation Reduction Act.

The budget bill includes sweeping cuts to programs like Medicaid, SNAP, and home heating assistance, while also extending tax breaks to billionaires and others with extremely high incomes The legislation is expected to result in 30,000 Mainers losing food assistance, 40,000 losing heating aid, and 50,000 losing health care coverage.
Rep. Amy Roeder (D-Bangor) described the legislation as “an act of violence against the people of Maine,” while Rep. Jan Dodge (D-Belfast), a retired teacher, said the nearly $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and SNAP will directly affect students in Maine classrooms.
