The Breakdown: Extremely rare conservation supervisor election to be held Saturday

NEW ORLEANS — In your Breakdown: there’s a very unique and rare election happening this weekend for residents of Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard, St. Charles, and St. John Parishes.

The election has garnered interest online because it is such a rare occurrence. In fact, there have been fewer than 10 elections held in Louisiana history for the Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors. Candidates are hardly ever opposed.

Louisiana has 44 soil and water conservation districts.
Each district has a board of five supervisors; three of whom are elected and two who are appointed. Their roles are laid out in Louisiana law.

A supervisor’s job is extremely local. They work with local landowners and farmers to protect natural resources and provide resources for conservation. This year -- for possibly the first time -- there is a challenger for a seat on the Crescent District Board.
