Heres the joint statement from @mayorbowser.bsky.social and the National Park Service on Dupont Circle reopening to the public today. As I tweeted earlier, a smaller fence will be placed around the fountain, but the circle will be fully open.

PRIDE NEWS: The fencing placed around Dupont Circle yesterday by the National Park Service is coming down this morning, a few hours before the WorldPride Parade is scheduled to start. Its placement, for public safety reasons, drew widespread criticisms from many locals.

After a little digging, I found the solicitation for the anti-scale fencing around Dupont Circle. The Department of Interior put out the call for offers on May 21: sam.gov/opp/7fbf5f59...

I asked U.S. Park Police how much it costs to install and take down fencing around Dupont Circle, and I was given the answer all reporters dread: You need to FOIA that. (I appreciate why FOIA exists, but dislike when it seems to be used as a way to delay releasing information.)

This helps clarify the timeline a little. So MPD Chief Pamela Smith asked the U.S. Park Police on April 22 to close Dupont Circle during Pride. Her request only became public this week, but clearly the Park Police was moving ahead with it as of two weeks ago.

(34,709 posts)Because Gay people? Again? Now? Is this what that was all about? Can't be. Please tell me I read this wrong.
After following all the crap that they had to go through to open it back up I am stunned. Enjoy your freedom fellow citizens, especially that you got it and they had to be nice (so far) about it.
I hope I am wrong about this, I just came in from working hard outside in the heat. I feel a bit faint seeing this. My god.
