I got my new passport today! Mrs. Aristus's new one is on the way.

At last! Soon, I can get out of this wretched country for a while. Weekends in Canada. Vacations in Europe. Anywhere but here.

My passport lapsed a year ago. It was the first time since 1993 that I hadn’t had a valid passport. Worst time to be stuck in this crumbling, once-great nation.

Last October I went to Scotland, where I'd never been. Had a wonderful time. But, I have no immediate plans for another international trip.
We are acquiring documents to apply for citizenship by descent to Canada. My great grandfather --one of 8 siblings--was born there. There's a family plot in a church graveyard in Ontario: my father's brother is buried there because he returned to Canada in the late '60's. One of my sons and his partner have been joking about " when they move to Canada." So, maybe a trip there before long?

Don’t think there are any Canadians in the bunch. I can ask her, though.

But she is German, like all her ancestors. Our daughters and grandchildren have German and American passports, but my wife never saw any reason to get an American passport, and I never saw any reason to get a German passport, although I do have a full EU residence and work permit.

But, after the absolute debacle that was trying to get my Real ID, I am pretty much done with the entire shit show.

I don't do very well when people and procedures are as idiotic as these processes are.

There is only one way I am leaving anything. Whether I like it or not.

Looking forward to getting some stamps in it. Most places just scan the passport’s bar code. But I usually ask if they will stamp it, too. They usually do.
