(4,356 posts)He was my math teacher in 7th grade and science teacher in 8th.
He was from Broyklin (that's how he pronounced it) and when teaching us geometry, he'd always use fractions like "27 & a turd". It always got a huge response from the students and all of learned more from him because of his sense of humor.
In 8th grade he was my science teacher and using both science and math registered us in the school district science fair.
With the help of the woodworking and plastics shops, we built a 6 foot operating accurate slide rule.
The math involved in Converting a standard 10 inch slide rule to a 6 foot version was incredibly intense. We tried numerous times before we got the scale right so that the entry was operable and correct.
We started in September and the fair was in January.
The wood shop built the wooden parts, and the plastic shop built the slide, all to scale.
We won first place in the math division of the science fair. He was a wonderful and loved teacher.
RIP, Mr Tuma. Thank you!

I wonder if she thought of this approach herself, or is it something a teacher taught her?
