a check or paying online?
Im worried that a check may lie around awhile or get lost if the IRS is short staffed or has further reductions and thought maybe online might be a better paper trail, I.e., credit card transaction.
What are you doing?

(10,630 posts)It does concern me that Musk and his merry band of Nazis will eventually infiltrate the IRS database and have access to my personal banking information. Unfortunately Ive paid online for years, so the IRS has had that info for a long time.
Water under the bridge, I guess.
As I recall, the IRS charges a pretty stiff fee for using credit cards.

(6,044 posts)A few years ago, I paid by check and they never recorded it. Finally this year they caught it. A pain to straighten it out.

(408 posts)I tried the H&R Block online program and it came up with a figure I owed. I always set it aside and come back a few days later to review it and it said I owed more than the first time. So I went to the local H&R Block office and had them do it and it came up nearly $4,000 less than what the online program said. Although I paid a couple hundred dollars for it it still saved me thousands. Both California and the IRS have accepted my payments.

(7,064 posts)Especially now that they feel they can send anyone they they want to El Salvador. I want immediate confirmation that my payment has been received, and the only way I will get that is with an online payment. It just pisses me off to no end that this year we are paying more than we have ever paid before and that money will simply wind up lining the pockets of billionaires.

(14,962 posts)I always have to pay something every year. At least it's quite a bit less than it used to be before the standard deduction was increased in 2017.

(14,432 posts)My CPA said he had at least 5 clients who have had their checks stolen from the mail and washed, meaning someone changes the name on the check and then cashes or deposits it.
Any envelope addressed to IRS or a State Dept of Revenue is targeted.
And online paying is easy and requires no account to be set up; simply pay by credit card (with a fee) or have it drafted from your bank account.

(8,415 posts)But I think I would rather have them have my credit card informayion than my checking account information.
A credit card company can quickly change my number, my Expiry, and my CVV. A Bank could, I presume, change my account number - but the bank routing number in the checks could not be changed unless I changed banks.
