On March 11th, I was in the hospital for two days with vertigo. After a CAT scan, an MRI, and a CAT scan comparison it was determined there was nothing numerology wrong with me. Crystals in my inner ear had moved into the canals causing my vertigo. I was released with a walker and after about three days with it I was able to ditch it and use a cane. Last week was was able to ditch the cane and I can walk unassisted with very little wobble. I'm almost back to normal but he thing I missed was being able to drive.
Yesterday was the first time in 29 days that I drove. I saw my doctor the week before and let him know I was planning to drove on Sunday and he had no objections. I had a plan. Where l live we have a couple of small hills so I drove up and down the to see how I did. No problem; aced it. I feels good to be able to drive. I live by myself and I hate asking people to do things like take me to the supermarket. Since I live relatively close to the supermarket, I ordered a backpack from Amazon and used it instead of being laden down with carrying plastic bags. Surprisingly, when loaded it seemed to help me walk steadily.
Sometimes, ut's the little things we take for granted that we miss when we can no longer do them.

(26,454 posts)Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo .
Ive had it myself twice from a blow to my head (caused by myself) that loosened the crystals in my inner ear , like you had happen.
The first time it happened I was turning over in bed one morning . I do this trick to lift the spread over me with my upmost leg and as the cover is up i spin from one side to the other .
I experienced a sensation of spinning over and over so badly I thought I would fly off the bed and slam the wall , and threw out my hands to protect myself . Opened my eyes and I was just where I should be, but on my other side . Very trippy feeling .
Later that morning taking a shower i bent down to wash my lower legs and feet and I thought I was turning somersaults like I had vaulted from a high dive and was spinning in the air head over heels . I snapped my eyes open and I was fine .
And thats when I figured it out . With my eyes closed I had the spins , with them open it didnt happen . Tested my theory with the toweling off , eyes open - fine , eyes closed - spins . The eyes grounded me . With them closed my actions allowed my inner ears to attempt to orient me in space with the crystals wreaking havoc on my proprioception .
It went away in a few weeks , returned months later for a short week , but i was prepared for it . Kept my eyes open for the situations that would trigger it . It has not returned for many years .
Sounds like you had a more severe case than mine . Hopefully you have resolved it .

(408 posts)Have you ever seen a movie of an old time sailing ship that's bobbing up and down in rough seas and there is a crewman down below in the hold trying to walk but keeps getting rocked back and forth? That's how I felt. It began when I woke up on a Saturday and the room appeared tilted to the right.
One of the things the physical therapist told me is the eyes send a message to the brain as to what your position is and the inner ear tries to respond to what the eyes are seeing. When the inner ear doesn't respond that's when the dizziness begins. I still, to some degree, experience some off-balance when I close my eyes while shampooing my hair or when I getting ready to go upstairs to bed and I turn off the living room lamp and walk six feet the stairs where there is a light switch. My eyes and ears don't like me walking dark but it is getting better.
I start the first of eight vestibule therapy sessions in three weeks so hopefully by then everything will be cleared up and I can get back to bowling and prepare for tournament in August.

(26,454 posts)Between your eyes and ears in this matter . You have a good handle on it.
The sense of sight overrides all the other senses . With your eyes closed other senses rise to the occasion , often as best they can even if not enough to define reality .
Vestibule therapy
Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy . Ok I had to look that up and it sounds like an excellent approach for your condition , and many others .
Sounds like you are returning to a more balanced life and one you will be happier in .
Best of luck !
