Most extremely socialized cats don't seem to mind their people stroking, patting, some cuddling or even coming behind the head to place a light kiss on the back of the head behind the ears. But, boy, if I had a cat reacting like that to a facial approach, I would NOT keep doing it. The nose rubs initiated by the cat should be considered equivalent without any stress.

Sometimes the ingrained instincts explain a lot.
