Geez 😡 The US keeps getting more and more backwards. 'Carded' for wine at age 70

WTF is wrong with America !!

The simple task of going down to your local grocery stores,,,,
Pick up some fruits and veggies….

Get a 6-pack of Mexican beer for celebration St Patrick’s Day
(No HARP or SMITHWICKS available either)

Grab a couple of bottles of Argentina wine

Go to checkout AND at WHOLE FOODS the checkout person
Wants my ID

???

I responded HELL LOOK AT ME! IM NEARLY 70 YEARS OLD,
I GOT A HEAD OF WHITE GRAY HAIR!

WHY DO YOU NEED MY ID?

ABSOLUTELY STUPID!
AMERICANS HAVE TO ENDURE ENDLESS LACK OF COMMON SENSE.

Ihave NEVER been carded in..

Mexico
Canada
Ireland
Wales
England
France
Sweden
Finland
Estonia
Italy

ETC

ONLY CARDED. BACK IN BACKWARDS USA

THE USA IS A JOKE NOW!

I don't mind and always have my DL out and ready. The check out person and I always get a chuckle out of it.

3. Do they scan your card?
Thu Mar 13, 2025, 01:50 PM

or just look at it?

Does it depend on the retailer? Or if you pay cash or card? I think they do what they like, or what their boss says.

6. I would not shop where they scan. That makes a record, which is backed up and is effectively permanent

Do you suddenly see ads on the internet for your favourite wine or beer?

Grocers scan DL for in-store liquor purchases. Beer and wine. Beer distributors, no, if you pay cash. And we have state stores, they don't scan for cash either.

I hear what you're saying, but I don't see a lot of liability if the state knows I bought a bottle of wine and a case of beer three years ago. I don't like it, but it is what it is, you want to buy it, or you don't.

(Unless you meant this post in satire)
But it’s store policy most places . Cashiers are required to card all alcohol purchasers , and could lose their job if they don’t . Most likely all transactions are being recorded . Management will know if they don’t .

5. I know it's not the cashier, BUT a the idiot management of Whole Foods

The MANAGEMENT of WHole Foods is THE PROBLEM !,

In not the biggest deal,,, BUT annoying as hell.
When you’re in upper 60s, and 70s and even 80s,
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO JUSTIFICATION FOR BEING CARDED, NONE!

(I believe they SCANNED ID, not just looking at)

So just NOT buying any wine there anymore.
Whole Foods can SHOVE IT !!

The other local HEB grocery store in my neighborhood does NOT require an ID to
purchase beer or wine — so that’s where I will buy my occasional bottle of wine.

SCREW WHOLE FOODS

You largely eliminate the risk of underage sales if you just card anyone. Removes the x factor of the cashiers judgement. Also, some high school and college kids have dressed up as old people back when I was in high school to get around the id check.

9. At liquor stores....I HAVE NEVER BEEN CARDED FOR DECADES

Liquor stores still do NOT card me.
In fact I can’t even remember the last time I was
asked for ID at a Liquor Store. It’s been at least 40 YEARS AGO.

BUT at grocery stores, which sell only WINE and BEER,
they have NOT asked for my ID before TODAY.

WHEN I used the self-checkout at WHOLE FOODS,
when I bought wine,,, the self checkout machine would
Require a clerk to OK the sale,,, and that’s all was ever done,
I NEVER showed an ID at the self checkout at WHOLE FOODS.

There were cashiers that had sold to me 100+ times (like day after day ... I was quite a boozehound from 2017-2021) who checked my ID every.single.time. And I'm in my 50's. They literally would not sell to me if I'd forgotten my ID at home that one day. Literally if you like bought alcohol, showed ID, walked out to your car, realized you forgot something, immediately went back in and grabbed it, and were face to face with the SAME cashier *1 minute* later, they wouldn't sell to you without showing your ID again.

One of my neighborhood pubs does that. A former manager told "Until you're thirty, being carded is an insult. After thirty it's a compliment." He once got carded at the place he manages. "Who are you?" he was asked. He answered "I'm your boss."

Even obvious seniors get asked. I think if a business got caught and fined for selling to a minor they have to ask for IDs of everyone!
