(50,000 posts)or just look at it?
Does it depend on the retailer? Or if you pay cash or card? I think they do what they like, or what their boss says.

(50,000 posts)Grocers scan DL for in-store liquor purchases. Beer and wine. Beer distributors, no, if you pay cash. And we have state stores, they don't scan for cash either.
I hear what you're saying, but I don't see a lot of liability if the state knows I bought a bottle of wine and a case of beer three years ago. I don't like it, but it is what it is, you want to buy it, or you don't.

But its store policy most places . Cashiers are required to card all alcohol purchasers , and could lose their job if they dont . Most likely all transactions are being recorded . Management will know if they dont .

(1,542 posts)The MANAGEMENT of WHole Foods is THE PROBLEM !,
In not the biggest deal,,, BUT annoying as hell.
When youre in upper 60s, and 70s and even 80s,
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO JUSTIFICATION FOR BEING CARDED, NONE!
(I believe they SCANNED ID, not just looking at)
So just NOT buying any wine there anymore.
Whole Foods can SHOVE IT !!
The other local HEB grocery store in my neighborhood does NOT require an ID to
purchase beer or wine so thats where I will buy my occasional bottle of wine.
SCREW WHOLE FOODS

(2,349 posts)You largely eliminate the risk of underage sales if you just card anyone. Removes the x factor of the cashiers judgement. Also, some high school and college kids have dressed up as old people back when I was in high school to get around the id check.

(1,542 posts)Liquor stores still do NOT card me.
In fact I cant even remember the last time I was
asked for ID at a Liquor Store. Its been at least 40 YEARS AGO.
BUT at grocery stores, which sell only WINE and BEER,
they have NOT asked for my ID before TODAY.
WHEN I used the self-checkout at WHOLE FOODS,
when I bought wine,,, the self checkout machine would
Require a clerk to OK the sale,,, and thats all was ever done,
I NEVER showed an ID at the self checkout at WHOLE FOODS.

(759 posts)There were cashiers that had sold to me 100+ times (like day after day ... I was quite a boozehound from 2017-2021) who checked my ID every.single.time. And I'm in my 50's. They literally would not sell to me if I'd forgotten my ID at home that one day. Literally if you like bought alcohol, showed ID, walked out to your car, realized you forgot something, immediately went back in and grabbed it, and were face to face with the SAME cashier *1 minute* later, they wouldn't sell to you without showing your ID again.

(5,690 posts)when I was with her several years ago because of the minuscule amount of alcohol in non- alcoholic beer.

(3,723 posts)One of my neighborhood pubs does that. A former manager told "Until you're thirty, being carded is an insult. After thirty it's a compliment." He once got carded at the place he manages. "Who are you?" he was asked. He answered "I'm your boss."

(24,927 posts)Even obvious seniors get asked. I think if a business got caught and fined for selling to a minor they have to ask for IDs of everyone!
