Nature inFocus photography competition winners 2024

The contest announced its winners for images that captured moments in natural history and critical environmental issues

In startling close-up, this photo of a tiger beetle larva laying in wait for its prey was given special mention in the Animal Portraits category AMITH KIRAN MENEZES


In the Animal Behaviour category this photo of two battling spiny-tailed lizards in Rajasthan received special mention PRADYUT KUMAR DAS


In the winning photo for the category Wildscape & Animals in Their Habitat, a large male spectacled bear sought refuge from the midday sun in a century-old fig tree, high in the Andean mountains of Ecuador JACQUIE MATECHUK


In the winner for the category of Animal Behaviour a school of hardyhead silversides move to escape a squad of blacktip reef sharks ANGELA ALBIA AND AUGUST PAULA


A tunicate salp — which grows to around 10cm — carries tiny crabs, shrimp and larval creatures within its transparent body. This photograph won a special mention in the Animal Behaviour category MASSIMO GIORGETTA


A runner up in the Animal Portraits category: a Steller’s sea eagle teeters on a drifting ice floe in the Nemuro Strait off Hokkaido, Japan PHILIPPE RICORDEL


A damselfly peering through a hole in a vibrant green leaf won in the Young Photographer category SALAHUDDIN AHMED


Taken with a custom-built CCTV macro lens, this photo of a wasp spider holding its prey won special mention in the Animal Portraits category ROMAN HILL


Also receiving special mention in Wildscapes & Animals in Their Habitat was this photo of a leopard camouflaged against the bark of a tree in Kumana National Park, Sri Lanka PRASHANTHAN YOGENDRANATHAN


Another special mention in the Young Photographer category showed Kazuri, a leopard in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya SEYAN HIRANI


This image of a water buffalo in Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka, was runner-up in the Animal Portraits category PRASHANTHAN YOGENDRANATHAN


Awarded special mention in Wildscape & Animals in Their Natural Habitat, this image captures geese flying above patterns in the saline lakes near Akaszto, Hungary TIBOR LITAUSZKI


In this minimalist backlit set-up, the transparency of small snails contrasts with the silhouettes of blades of grass, a winner of the Creative Nature Photography category KAI KOLODZIEJ
