If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you may live in Texas;
If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you may live in Texas;
If 'Vacation' means going anywhere south of Dallas for the weekend, you may live in Texas;
If you measure distance in hours, you may live in Texas;
If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you may live in Texas;
If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked, you may live in Texas;
If you carry jumper cables in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you may live in Texas;
If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph -- you're going 80 and everybody's passing you, you may live in Texas;
If you find 60 degrees 'a little chilly,' you may live in Texas;
If you actually understand these jokes, and share them with all your Texas friends, you definitely live in Texas.

We love yall too!😬

Why is there so much depression in NY?
Because the light at the end of the tunnel is NJ.

(20,282 posts)I do love Boston, love Cape Cod (off season), love the concentration of top notch universities, love the cutting edge biotech, but please leave the Mad Max driving at home when venture to your northern neighbors. Above all, don't tailgate. Outside of Burlington (Mass north) it's considered extraordinarily rude.

(2,007 posts)I enjoyed the map, and the concept.
Interesting how my state doesn't hate anyone. After thinking about that I realized why.
Its all about commerce and tourism, and appearances.

(7,705 posts)I grew up in NE North Carolina. One of our favorite jokes was this: How can you tell when you have driven into Virginia?
*roll roll roll BUMPITYBUMPITYBUMPITYBUMPITYBUMPITYBUMPITYBUMPITYBUMPITYBUMPITYBUMPITYBUMPITYBUMPITY!*
There were many others, but where I was, most jokes and complaints were about Virginia. I found the same when I was down in Charlotte. The jokes and complaints were about South Carolina. Here is one of my faves:
https://i.postimg.cc/7ht1vD6j/temp-Image-V2-Xmw-O.avif
Then, I lived outside of Asheville. Can you guess who they whined about? I will give you a hint: N.C. used to claim it.
Now, growing up on the Outer Banks, we complained about Ohio as well, since that was the most spotted license plate every summer. But, we did not say it out loud, because of what you said... commerce, tourism, and appearances.
However, once the season was over... whoo boy...

(2,007 posts)I'm in western NC, a tourist town, so we rely on visitors from near and far!
There is a "friction" between NC and SC, but its all the south as far as I'm concerned.
But mostly they hate Yankees, other southerners are welcomed.
I'll share a Southern joke with you.
What's the difference between a Yankee and a damn Yankee?
A Yankee comes here, looks around and goes home
(Those that stay are damn Yankees!)

(24,937 posts)I'd say Kansas is the worst, by far. There is nothing to see there, hardly any variation in the landscape, just dry dusty used up feeling plains, and the people aren't friendly. Now this is based on a "country tour" in 1978, I'm sure things have changed, but I'd bet they haven't changed much. Wyoming would be second, if not for Grand Tetons and Yellowstone it would be very close to Kansas, but friendlier. Most of it is so flat and boring.
The worst state to drive through for it's intolerance of anyone different - Texas by a mile! Only LA even comes close.

We're just sick of the FIB's who slam Wisconsin as a "hick state" full of dairy farmers, yet they drive up here often in their huge RV's, spending lots of money here in Wisconsin.

Recently, Californians have been cashing out their overpriced homes and moving to the interior west. This, of course, runs up the cost of living and creates a variety of problems. Thats why the hate has shifted to California.

(2,413 posts)Most of the hates seem to be for neighboring states. Familiarity breeds contempt, I guess. Following that pattern, the reason Hawaii doesn't seem to hate anybody is because they're so far away from everybody else. Why does Alaska hate Texas? Does it have something to do with them being the two biggest states geographically?

Some of my favourite relatives are from Northern New Jersey and they're good drivers!
I have some iffiness towards "The South" bc of Jim Crow etc, was also taught about racism up here in NYC when I was a kid.
Also iffy about Idaho since for decades hearing about the RW racists up there.
Everywhere else I'm either neutral to quite positive having had brief stops or longer day to 2 - 3 day visits in my two very big trips mostly by bus ('79) to AZ, NM, CA, then the next year ('80) AZ, NM, SD, CO. Shorter stays in Mich. Many good visits to Non-State DC. Plus positive trips to all the NE States as a kid to 16 yr old. 👍
