RFK Jr.'s purge is about reducing access to vaccines
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claims that his decision on Monday to purge a key vaccine advisory committee at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is about rooting out conflicts of interest and restoring confidence in vaccines. His words suggest it is really about advancing his anti-vaccine agenda.
We are retiring the 17 current members of the committee, some of whom were last-minute appointees of the Biden administration, the health and human services secretary wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. Without removing the current members, the current Trump administration would not have been able to appoint a majority of new members until 2028.
In other words, Kennedy is targeting the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices because he sees it not as the independent scientific body that has helped tame multiple infectious diseases over the past half-century but as a political instrument to control. And he has left no question what he would like to do with it: reduce access to vaccines.
Kennedy criticizes the committee for having served as a rubber stamp for vaccines. He complains that it has never recommended against a vaccine even those later withdrawn for safety reasons. The implication is that vaccines are more dangerous than members of the committee let on and that they must be more aggressive in keeping them from the public.
