'Careful What You Pray For': Jim Clyburn Warns GOP Redistricting Could Blow Up In Their Faces and Help Democrats

Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) cautioned House Republicans should be very careful what they pray for as he claimed redistricting efforts in his state of South Carolina had opened the opportunity for three Democratic candidates to get elected. The congressman appeared on CNNs State of the Union to speak with anchor Jake Tapper who raised the gerrymandering wars that had begun across multiple states ahead of the midterms, kicked off by President Donald Trumps push for Texas redistricting in 2024.
Then Democrats decided to fight fire with fire, the anchor said. California came after that, Virginia and more. After redrawing maps in six states, Republicans now have approximately an eight seat advantage in these gerrymandering wars.. He asked, What do you think this might mean come November? Might Republicans hold the house?. Well, they might and they might not, because I do believe that the voters in this country are watching very closely and they are feeling, emotionally, what the threat is to our future, Clyburn replied.
He continued: And I do not believe that the majority of the voters in this country condone and will agree with what President Trump is doing. South Carolina, our delegation, our House, talked with him, before yesterday, but the Supreme Court two years ago spoke to this district and said it was unconstitutional. But the president says he wants them to redraw the lines anyway!
All Im going to say to that is be very careful what you pray for, he added. Because what I do believe is that when they finish with the redistricting, there will be the possibilities of at least three Democrats getting elected here in South Carolina to the United States Congress.

(55,711 posts)OR, converse view, ejecting Dems with votes from GOP safe.
Only so many GOP votes to go around. You plan to win with 5% across the board ... what if Dems flood the zone by 7%?
Then GOP will head to the courts, refuse to count, scream "RIGGED!"

(1,866 posts)Strategy that will succeed.
Speak Less
And
DO MORE.
Cancel the media adds and spend the money on total GOTV. Use the Buddy System and walk every Vote to the polls. This was the strategy that passed a school bond issue when that was fantasy in our state.
We fired our consultant because we knew his campaign would fail.
The personal touch cannot be beaten.
We have been taught time-and-time-again that media campaigns are cash cows for consultants and tv and death for campaigns.
One of the biggest criticisms of the Democratic Party is that they only come around when they want Money.
The way forward is to be observed as an advocate for the issues that confront the working stiffs who make all the work get done
every day, not just the six weeks before elections.
Machine Politics (and Unions) defiled the notion of public service by their transactional tactics, but actually produced results at times often by just showing up.
Be visible and Get Out The Vote.

(73,879 posts)i once knocked on the door of a polysci prof from northwestern. had the most interesting convo.
hed done the research. told me- mail pieces mean very little. tv, yard signs, same. gets u name recognition, period.
phone calls turn ppl off. (im sure texts, more so.) what wins is face to face. there is just no substitute for it.
it does take a certain amount of money to recruit, transport and feed those door knockers. but its nothing compared to teevee, esp in big media markets. as someone who worked hard for obama, i can tell u, thats how he won. i dont think ive seen anyone since who flooded the streets the way that campaign did. (but admit i havent been active since.)
