Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy returns to reality TV roots, sparking criticism and questions

Source: CNN Politics

PUBLISHED May 9, 2026, 8:03 PM ET

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s new reality show, filmed with his family over the last seven months, has sparked criticism amid high gas prices, in addition to raising ethics questions.

Duffy said that costs for the five-part series titled “The Great American Road Trip,” which will air for free on YouTube ahead of America’s 250th birthday, were paid for by a nonprofit, the Great American Road Trip Inc., and that “zero taxpayer dollars were spent on my family.” He said his family did not receive a salary or production royalties.

The project’s sponsors, according to its website, include Boeing, Shell, Toyota, United Airlines and Royal Caribbean — all companies that intersect with the Department of Transportation.

“As everyday Americans struggle with the price of gas and raise concerns about airline safety, the Secretary announces that he spent work time going on a road trip that appears to have been funded by the very industries his agency oversees,” Donald K. Sherman, the president of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said in a statement.

Americans want entertainment, not leadership.

They want to be amused, horrified, shocked, 24/7.

Trump and the entire cabinet should do this all the time.

The people will eat it up with a spoon.

Narcissism, sadism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, being two-faced, selfishness, superficiality, greed, coveting, gaslighting, backstabbing, clique forming, bullying, violence.

And those that are do the worst tend to either do the best or are the most popular.

I refuse to watch any of it.

I remember, as a kid, being told The Three Stooges was the same a reality shows. The problem is reality shows are cheap to make, easy to produce, and you don't have to pay the cast, especially if you make it a contest where people get a small device that plugs into the wall and makes a whurring noise.

Americans would sell their children for an extra buck and the chance for at least fifteen minutes of fame.

Mayor Pete along with a lot of others including Joe Biden, Governor Shapiro, and really good workers got this Freeway in Philadelphia back open in under 2 weeks.

But our current Sec. of Transportation is taking months of vacations which is paid for by corporations who do business with the USDOT. So in the end we are paying for his and his family’s vacations by paying those
corporations for their goods and services.

But MAGA is fine with Duffy going on a long vacation to film a reality show.

I don't think he's the least bad. He may not be as overtly incompetent as Kennedy or Mullen or Patel or that joke currently running Justice or Hegseth, but he did announce when he was confirmed that he would push policies that benefit Trump voters over Blue states.

Come to think of it, though, I can't think of a current Trump appointee who IS remotely competent.
