A Santa Fe jury held Tuesday afternoon reached a $375 million verdict against the world's largest social media company, holding it had violated state consumer protection laws.
The jury held Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, had both engaged in unfair and deceptive trade practices and unconscionable trade practices, and had done so deliberately in both cases.
For both unfair and deceptive and unconscionable trade practices, the jury held Meta had committed 37,500 violations of each and was liable for a $5,000 penalty for each violation.
Jury deliberations started Monday after a six-week trial in state District Court, at which lawyers for the New Mexico Department of Justice alleged the social media giant violated state consumer protection laws by failing to disclose the risks its platforms pose for children, using testimony from undercover investigators, New Mexico educators and others to make its case.
