Trump says he won't sign any bills into law until SAVE Act passes

President Trump on Sunday threatened to not sign any bills into law until the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act is approved by the Senate, doubling down on his push to change voting requirements ahead of the midterm elections.
I, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed, AND NOT THE WATERED DOWN VERSION GO FOR THE GOLD: MUST SHOW VOTER I.D. & PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP: NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS EXCEPT FOR MILITARY ILLNESS, DISABILITY
, the president wrote in his Sunday morning Truth Social post.
The leader has pressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to use a talking filibuster to pass the bill, which was approved by the House in February. The filibuster would force Democrats to speak continuously on the Senate floor to delay a vote on the bill. But, once they cede the floor, Republicans could circumvent the need for a 60-vote majority and pass the measure with just 51 votes.
On Sunday, Trump again urged Thune to use this tactic to get the bill across the finish line.

Good. Because there is a little thing in the Constitution that his administration refuses to read or abide by, that will have legislation passed by Congress, automatically become law after 10 days if not signed (unless it's at the end of a session and/or Congress is not in session (and they won't technically "go out of session" since they do "Pro Forma/gavel in-gavel out sessions when recessed), when it would revert to being a "pocket veto" (typically before the change to a new Congressional session at the end of a calendar year).

Section 7.

If any bill shall not be returned by the President within ten days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the same shall be a law, in like manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their adjournment prevent its return, in which case it shall not be a law.

(20,830 posts)Republican voters, especially married women, prefer mail-in voting.
I wonder if married Republican Senators with wives who took their names, or with married daughters, will like the fact that their husbands/fathers will PREVENT them from voting?
Donald Trump cannot hold his breath for more than 15 seconds at this stage because there is no way this passes the US Senate with 60 votes.

(22,890 posts)Other than the SAVE act, and the supplemental appropriations bill for DHS?
This congress has sent a record low number of bills to the president, and I dont expect that to change before the midterms, unless the debt ceiling needs to be raised or a continuing resolution is passed on the budget next fall.
I guess no more post offices will get renamed this year

(168,655 posts)AND the lapsed 5-year appropriation Farm Bill, that is on its own C.R. for another year. That "extension" is an extension of the extension on the 2018 Farm Bill, the last one that was actually passed (that itself was a late version of the 2013 one that finally passed in 2014). They never did a 2023 one.
It has all the farm subsidies and food programs like SNAP, etc.

Any measure passed by a Republican Congress shouldnt be signed into law.

(60,909 posts)Very few bills passing the current Congress have much Democratic support. The bills he won't sign are then Republican bills.

(15,791 posts)He knows he'll be investigated and impeached with a Democratic Congress. This is panic masquerading as bravado.
The act as described would violate state sovereignty regarding election methods, which could be blocked by the courts as being unconstitutional.
When the government fears the people, there is liberty. That's still true, but only if the vote is stronger than their suppression efforts.

(13,204 posts)And do they even have 50 votes + Vance for SAVE?
With a speaking filibuster if each opponent of the bill speaks for at least 12 hours, that only gets you 80 days or so (Thune can recess instead of adjourning to keep the same legislative day, and a Senator can only speak twice on the same "day"
If Thune does, the felon may regret it as the filibuster generates daily news with best bits going viral and endless speculation on how long they can go -- with highly motivated and fit Senators vying to break Bookers record.

(684 posts)That if he does this then he should kill the fillibuster entirely otherwise Dems will block ever single bill and nominee until 2029. Mutually assured desstruction does work well.

(12,470 posts)This is THE reason for the SAVE Act: disenfranchising married women. And they won't stop there.
It's the plan. It has nothing to do with "election integrity", or "voter fraud", or "illegals voting". This bill is the first attempt to overturn the 19th Amendment.
