Starmer considering sending military to Greenland as Trump ratchets up rhetoric

Source: The Independent

Sunday 11 January 2026 23:48 EST

Sir Keir Starmer is considering sending British troops to Greenland as Donald Trump’s rhetoric over snatching the Danish territory continues to ratchet up.

It comes just days after the prime minister committed to sending troops into Ukraine as the core of the coalition of the willing to guarantee the peace, with former senior military top brass questioning whether the UK has enough personnel.

The revelation comes after former Obama assistant secretary of state Frank Rose told The Independent that Mr Trump’s actions threaten to undermine US defence in the region and lead to allies turning on him.

President Trump has insisted he wants control over Greenland and has not ruled out the prospect of using military force to seize the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

but with resources he wants for his friends.
He does not have the power to do that without Congressional approval. Congress has to grow some balls and start pushing back on this warmonger. Should have been impeached after his invasion of Venezuela.

The level of fucked we are cannot be understated. I spent many years of my life in Italy, including all four years high school, and I was born in the Netherlands.

Europe was my retirement plan and now this fucking asshole has destroyed that and I could not possibly be more bitter and angry.

Not to mention the death and destruction this will cause for everyone.

I am literally in tears typing this. I cannot believe it's come to this. That this fucking idiot is going to start a world war. Absolutely insane.

I live in England but all my family is on the East Coast. I’m scared to come back because I don’t want there to be some incident that allows that Orange Dungheap to close airspace or borders. My partner will be undergoing cancer treatment soon and I just can’t take the risk.

If Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada, etc. present a solid and well armed front against this lunacy, Trump would back down. It isn't enough to announce that you are considering it. Do it!

If anyone had tried to tell me that the day would come when the White House would be occupied by a deranged raving lunatic, and ALL of those with the power to do anything (i.e., Congress, which has the power to impeach and the Vice President and cabinet who have the ability to invoke the 25th amendment) would be sitting around staring into space and acting like everything is totally fine while the lunatic does all kinds of crazy stuff, I would not have believed it. I would have laughed and said, "Oh, don't be ridiculous! That would never happen!"

That's what's so maddening about the situation this country is in. The sheer unreality of having to sit by and watch helplessly while a mad man creates one horror after another and NO ONE DOES ANYTHING TO STOP HIM is agonizing. Sometimes I feel like I must be losing my own mind, because it's so hard to believe all of this is really happening!

The hell of it is, I don't even know who to complain to. My House rep and both of my state's senators are all Democrats, which is great in theory, but the rep and one of tbe senators are retiring at the end of this year snd will not be running for reelection this fall. They'll both eventually be replaced by "players to be named later," but in the meantime, they're lame ducks. My other senator is awesome, but what the hell can she do when her hands are tied, thanks to all the do nothing Republican senators she's surrounded by? I feel like there's no one I can turn to.

If I was represented by Republicans in both Houses, it would suck, but at least I could have the satisfaction of bombarding them with angry letters calling them out for betraying the oaths they swore when they took office and berating them for their cowardice. But what can I say to three Democrats who are outnumbered by Republicans who can't be bothered to pull their heads out of their asses and stop the Orange Hellbeast before he finishes destroying our democracy? I'm really at a loss. /end rant

I used this gif in a post yesterday, and I feel like I'm going to be using it a lot as long as this insane situation doesn't change.

and talk of impeachment for any government official if they take part in an invasion. She could use the "treason" word about it. Make it clear that after the midterms, investigations, impeachments, and blocking of funding for anything Republicans want will be the order of the day.

But he’s desperate to get that trade deal to go through. Their economy is shit and they’re desperate to sign a deal with anyone and everyone.

And that nasty lunatic Nigel Farage has a good shot at coming to power. It’s amazing how the US and UK keep playing the, “wait hold my beer game…” back and forth.
