CBS Responds to Pulling '60 Minutes' Episode as Bari Weiss Under Pressure

CBS has said it pulled its "60 Minutes" report on El Salvador's CECOT prison because it needed "additional reporting," according to Reuters. The broadcaster removed a link to the "Inside CECOT" segment before it was scheduled to be broadcast on Sunday.
"The broadcast lineup for tonight's edition of 60 Minutes has been updated," the program posted on X. "Our report 'Inside CECOT' will air in a future broadcast."
The decision came under fire from multiple journalists and commentators, who criticized CBS News' editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, who took over the role in October shortly after Skydance completed its takeover of Paramount and its subsidiaries.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald wrote on X: "It's almost impressive how much damage Bari Weiss has done to CBS News in such a short period of time. Someone quickly schedule a prime-time Town Hall with Alan Dershowitz to rectify the harm."

(44,617 posts)The facts are extremely ugly. Trump cant handle the truth. Weiss has no integrity, no soul. The Republican Party is a den of lying, cowardly criminals hell bent on pleasing him. He is a virulent, incredibly deadly cancer. And republicans think of ways to please him. Republican supporters are scum of the earth.

(165,199 posts)Brannon Braga nearly destroyed it in the beginning but Manny Cotto saved it the last 2 seasons (with attempts to fix the nonsense that Braga did to the Vulcans). Still have all the eps on VHS in a cabinet in my basement recorded when they were airing first run starting almost 25 years ago...

(165,199 posts)I have seen many pics over the years of people doing that.
I had a coworker who was really into it with her hubby and had gone to the very first convention in NYC in the early '70s... and I wouldn't be surprised if they did that too.

(165,199 posts)I have an old TNG costume (blue one since I was a labby) that I haven't donned in a long time and had debated wearing it to the last Creation Con I went to that was over 20 years ago but then didn't. It was part of Bill Shatner's and William Nimoy's last convention tour together and I have Shatner's autograph on a paperback of one of his Trek books that I brought and have Nimoy's on one of my TOS DVDs. I also got to meet fellow Philadelphian Bob Picardo from Voyager and Herb Jefferson Jr. from the original BSG.
And amazingly enough, I met Keir Dullea from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I was shocked that Dullea looked almost the same as he did in that movie 35 years earlier!
What was funny was that I had brought my laserdisc set of that movie, which is record album size, and people had an option for an autograph on a photo or whatever else (book, etc) and I handed Dullea's assistant (a young woman) the disc and they both stared at it, opened it up and intensely studied it, before I had to tell them what it was (I told them that it was the movie on 2 sides of 2 discs - my laserdisc player was an auto-changer one).

I did get his "John Hancock" on the inside of the disc jacket!

(165,199 posts)LOL!
True story but back in 1976, I had tics to be in the studio audience of a "Mike Douglas Show" taping which was done here in Philly in the-then KYW TV studios right near Independence Hall (the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History is at that location now).
The guests included Barbara Carerra, Don Knotts, and the-then hot child star Kristy McNichol. Well when the taping was done and we were leaving, I spotted Don Knotts hurriedly walking down a corridor to the back exit and I managed to catch up to him to ask for his autograph (had my handy little book ready) and he graciously stopped and obliged (he looked like his mind was on a million other things, which I expect it was).
But the most dramatic thing was out in front of the building when they brought Kristy McNichol out. She was 14 at the time and her managers basically shoved her into the middle of a growing crowd of fans, spectators and media. As me and the group I was with edged closer, I watched in sadness because when I was about to hand her my little book, the terror in her eyes due to all the people and media lights (it was dusk at the time), etc., impacted me so profoundly - especially when her manager gripped her shoulders to keep her in place, that after that, I refused to do anymore autograph-seeking for the next, almost-30 years (until that convention).

(11,653 posts)It doesn't happen very often (underline very often), but stories do get pulled at the last minute, both in newspapers as well as TV. And in the instances I've seen during my work in print media, it raises ire among the reporter(s) involved and staffers as well, as it did here.
There's a very good rundown of what may have happened at CBS in this latest episode in Brian Stelter's column Reliable Sources today. I recommend reading it. As the column says, Weiss pulled the story about as late as one possibly could. The PR for it had already been sent (and for a story like this, a note from their PR department could come pretty close to deadline).
I don't like Weiss' reasoning that she wanted a comment from Stephen Miller in the piece. We all know what a sleaze he is. But I want to see whether Weiss holds to her word that the piece will air when Miller's comment is included (and that she won't request any more surprise changes). What she's done at CBS so far doesn't put a lot of faith in her work, certainly. But if she really has that much concern for the story, she'll let it go through. We hope.
ADDING: Here's the memo that "60 Minutes" reporter Sharyn Alfonsi sent to her colleagues as reported by Brian Stelter:
