CHICAGO Jesse Jackson Jr., once a rising Democratic star who saw his congressional career unravel in scandal, is returning to the political stage. He will announce his bid this week for the same Illinois congressional seat he vacated over a decade ago.
Jesse has been meeting with residents whose concerns about the economy convinced him to run, according to a person close to his campaign granted anonymity to speak freely. He feels the district needs results fast and he is uniquely qualified to deliver.
Jackson will spend the coming weeks unveiling his economic plan and policy platforms to address the cost of living, joblessness and health care access, according to the person.
Its a dramatic twist for a man whose life once seemed destined for the national spotlight. The son of civil rights icon Rev. Jesse Jackson, he was first elected to Congress in 1995 and held his position for 17 years before it all came crashing down.

(471 posts)after being sentenced to 30 months in prison for conspiring to defraud his re-election campaign out of $750,000 in funds that were used to pay for vacations, personal items, and expenses including high-end appliances and electronics.
While his actions seem tame compared to what's going on today, we can only hope he turned over a new leaf.

(78,568 posts)I did not know about this. I think Pres pardons given willy nilly are not good for many people I am not saying good or bad for Jackson, as I know nothing of the case.
Jackson will have a tough time I do believe. --but if he has shown he has turned himself around, then more power to him.
from google:
Recent advocacy for a pardon
In December 2024, Jesse Jackson Jr. drew attention to President Joe Biden's pardon of Hunter Biden, publicly stating his own desire for a pardon.
His father, Rev. Jesse Jackson, wrote a letter to President Biden advocating for a pardon for both his son and former daughter-in-law, Sandi Jackson.
In January 2025, Jackson renewed his request for a presidential pardon, arguing that a pardon would clear his criminal record and provide a path to redemption. A pardon was not granted by the end of President Biden's term.
