Florida releases heavily blacked-out Alligator Alcatraz hurricane plan.

Florida emergency management officials released a heavily blacked-out disaster plan for the Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention center on Wednesday, just two days after saying they had no document detailing what the camp would do if threatened by a hurricane.
The 33-page draft plan appears to detail alternate facilities that could be used in an evacuation, procedures for detainee transportation and other measures that would be enacted in the event of a powerful storm or other emergency.
But specific details are a secret. Officials blacked out almost all of the pages, citing exemptions in the states public records law that allow information about tactical operations during emergencies to be shielded from disclosure.

I promise you that the hurricane guys have got the hurricane stuff covered, said Kevin Guthrie, the states emergency management director, last week.
The document, titled the South Florida Detention Center Continuity of Operations Plan, aims to maintain custody of detainees during an evacuation, ensure the continuation of medical care and other vital services, keep communications operational and protect detainee legal records and documentations. The plan also notes vendors have developed their own procedures for an emergency.

DeSantis demonstrating that he is prepared to ignore and suppress public accountability...because it looks and feels STRONG. Hand-picked, unidentified vendors have their own emergency plans. My guess is those plans involve getting large checks from the state and kicking back a small percentage to certain political committees.

(36,012 posts)As floodwaters rose in the OPP buildings, power was lost, and entire buildings were plunged into darkness. Deputies left their posts wholesale, leaving behind prisoners in locked cells, some standing in sewage-tainted water up to their chests.
"The sheriff's office was completely unprepared for the storm," said Tom Jawetz, Litigation Fellow for the National Prison Project. "The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals did more for its 263 stray pets than the sheriff did for the more than 6,500 men, women and children left in his care."
Prisoners went days without food, water and ventilation, and deputies admit that they received no emergency training and were entirely unaware of any evacuation plan. Even some prison guards were left locked in at their posts to fend for themselves, unable to provide assistance to prisoners in need.

(8,921 posts)Proper names like Alligator Alcatraz and Gulf of America are intentionally provocative and end up as a starting point for discussions which may or may not lead down a hoped-for path. In the case of Gulf of America, the prevalent result was ridicule- although I did see a Gulf of America t-shirt the other day.
Alligator Alcatraz is more problematic in that it is the official name of the facility. The intent of the name was to signal some kind of vindictive version of strength, determination, and non-wokeness in response to officially-sanctioned immigration paranoia. It is an icon that invites Americans to discard their humanity and their own constitutional rights.
Here's an alternate name:

The CRUELTY of it according to their frame of mind..."Who gives a fuck about a bunch of undocumented criminals anyway? They don't mean nothing."
History will not be kind to Ronnie D, ICE, DHS, or TACO Don.
