Aid groups say they have offered to save $9.7 million in contraceptives
The Trump administration is set to destroy a large stockpile of U.S.-funded contraceptives stored at a warehouse in Belgium, which says it has "explored all possible options to prevent the destruction."
The family-planning supplies, which include more than 50,000 intrauterine devices, nearly 2 million doses of injectable contraceptives, nearly 900,000 implantable contraceptive devices and more than 2 million packets of oral birth control, are worth about $9.7 million, according to an internal accounting in April, The Washington Post reported.
"The State Department confirms that a preliminary decision was made to destroy certain abortifacient birth control commodities from terminated Biden-era USAID contracts," a spokesperson said in a statement.

State Department to burn almost $10 million of contraceptives for poor countries

The Trump administration plans to incinerate $9.7 million worth of contraceptives intended for poor nations, after declining offers from the United Nations and reproductive organizations to buy or ship the supplies instead, the State Department confirmed to Axios on Thursday.
Why it matters: The move continues the administration's shift away from providing foreign assistance through the United States Agency for International Development, and its stated opposition to abortion-related family planning methods.

The supplies set to be destroyed include contraceptive implants, pills, and intrauterine devices, Reuters reported.

It will cost $167,000 to incinerate the contraceptives, which include intrauterine devices (IUDs), implants, injectables and pills, a State Department spokesperson told NPR. The stockpile is currently in a warehouse in Belgium and will be transported to a facility in France that handles medical waste.
It remains unclear when the supplies will be destroyed. The products expiration dates range from 2027 to 2031, according to Doctors Without Borders, a European-based charity that provides humanitarian medical care.
Contraceptives are essential and lifesaving health products, said Avril Benoît, CEO of Doctors Without Borders. (DWB) has seen firsthand the positive health benefits when women and girls can freely make their own health decisions by choosing to prevent or delay pregnancyand the dangerous consequences when they cannot. The US governments decision to incinerate millions of dollars worth of contraceptives is an intentionally reckless and harmful act against women and girls everywhere.
The contraceptives were purchased by the U.S. for the United States Agency for International Development, which was established by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 and provides foreign aid, disaster relief and economic development. USAID programs, including the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), have saved more than 90 million lives over the past two decades, according to a study published this month in medical journal the Lancet............................
