Trump's megabill squeaks through Senate, but House can still reject final version

The Senate on Tuesday passed President Donald Trumps megabill after days of negotiations and a marathon amendment session that at times appeared to imperil the domestic policy package.
The final vote was 51-50, with Vice President JD Vance casting a final, tie-breaking vote. Republican Sens. Thom Tillis, N.C., Rand Paul, Ky., and Susan Collins, Me., all broke with their party and voted against the massive spending bill.
Senate Majority Leader John Thunes victory in the upper chamber may be short-lived, however, as the megabill now goes to the House, where it faces an uncertain future amid firm GOP hold-outs.
The House, which just squeaked out its version of the bill, must accept the Senates substantial changes to the package, a daunting task especially as some GOP lawmakers have expressed continued concerns over the bills impact on the deficit. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projects the bill will add at least $3 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade.

(7,199 posts)The House will work quickly to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill that enacts President Trumps full America First agenda by the Fourth of July. The American people gave us a clear mandate, and after four years of Democrat failure, we intend to deliver without delay, said the statement from Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Whip Tom Emmer, and Chairwoman Lisa McClain.

House will vote tomorrow if Senate passes its version of Trump's agenda today, source says
From CNNs Sarah Ferris
If the Senate passes its version of President Donald Trumps agenda today, the House is expected to vote tomorrow, according to a GOP leadership source familiar with the plans.
Its a rapid turnaround for House lawmakers, who are currently scattered across the country for the holiday recess, but multiple GOP sources said they believed they could get it done in the House this week as well.
Both Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson have been working furiously to deliver Trump his first major legislative win this week, so the president can sign it in a special ceremony on the Fourth of July.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed with Vice-President JD Vance casting a tie-breaking vote after more than 24 hours of debate.
It now heads back to the House, or lower chamber, where it still faces more opposition. An earlier version was cleared by House Republicans by a single-vote margin.
Trump had given the Republican-controlled Congress a deadline of 4 July to send him a final version of the bill to sign into law.
But disputes over the deficit, social programmes and spending levels could create delays, with the president conceding on Tuesday morning it would be "very hard" to meet that deadline.
Despite efforts to galvanise his party, Senate Majority Leader John Thune lost three Republicans - Maine's Susan Collins, North Carolina's Thom Tillis and Kentucky's Rand Paul - in the narrow vote. Collins, Tillis and Paul joined all Democrats in voting against the bill.

Senator Lisa Murkowski has sold out America for a handful of gold.
BTW, during an in-the-hall post vote interview, the MSNBC chyron read, "Sen. Lisa Lisa Murkowski, (D - Connecticut)." She listed a half dozen things she didn't like about the bill --- and voted for it anyway.
That one vote would have killed the bill.

Murkowski just told reporters that the bill That She Just Voted FOR isn't any good and that she wants the House to make changes and send it back to the Senate -- "My hope is that the House is gonna look at this and recognize that we're not there yet"
