Melania Trump's Visa Questioned in Congressional Hearing

Source: Newsweek

Published Jun 26, 2025 at 3:25 AM EDT

First lady Melania Trump's immigration history came under fire during a heated congressional hearing this week. Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett questioned how the former model qualified for a visa typically reserved for individuals with "significant achievement." Speaking during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Crockett challenged what she described as selective outrage from Republican lawmakers over visa policy.

"Integrity isn't snatching lawful visa holders off the streets and throwing them into unmarked vans," she said. "Integrity is not revoking visas based on social media posts that hurt somebody's little feelings, because kids decided they wanted to go after Trump or this administration. We have a thing called free speech in this country."

Crockett then turned the spotlight on what she called a double standard in how visa rules are enforced and discussed, questioning why Republicans weren't scrutinizing the immigration paths of those close to the president. "Why aren't we talking about integrity when it comes to the president's family's visas?" she asked. The congresswoman specifically targeted Melania Trump's 2001 EB-1 visa, also known as the "Einstein visa," a category typically reserved for individuals with "sustained national or international acclaim."

"Let me tell you how you receive an Einstein visa," Crockett said. "You're supposed to have some sort of significant achievement, like being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize or a Pulitzer; being an Olympic medalist; or having other sustained extraordinary abilities and success in sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics. Last time I checked the first lady had none of those accolades under her belt."

because she only in her 2nd term in office as a member of the House of Representatives, having been elected for the first time in 2022 and as such, hasn't even been "fully vested" in the Civil Service benefits afforded to federal employees and Congress (must be in a position for at least 5 years).

Alternately, AOC is starting her 4th term.

Like Maxwell Frost (first elected the same year), she is an excellent firebrand and "puts it where the goats can get it". But the "Ranking Member" position is also considering the experience that comes with "seniority".

The issue at hand though, is probably more with respect to too many "seniors" vs "seniority" and that perhaps needs to be resolved.

they pick someone with experience in the old ways.

I live in a small town that always has a big 4th of July parade, 50 years ago a convertible traveled down the parade route. In the back seat of that convertible was a Democratic Rep and a Republican Rep.

Those days are long gone. We have one party that gave away its Congressional authority to a would-be dictator. We have one party that is getting ready to murder millions of Americans and shorten our lifespans.

What is needed are new tactics. The #1 qualification for selecting Democrats to positions of leadership should be those Democrats who are not afraid to bash Congressional Magats right in the face.

I watched Chuck Schumer yesterday once again reading from a paper on the Senate floor, I rarely see him give a speech without his piece of paper. Then I remember back to the Lion of the Senate and think to myself, that's what is missing, fire and brimstone.

GOTV and hope we have fair elections is our main strategy.

and their "in-your-face" tactics.

Unfortunately people like Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman were both caught up in the wrath of that sentiment (although Bowman, being from NY, might be seeing the advancement of Zohran Mamdani as cathartic).

It's always a fine dance as I remember the "in-your-face" Tom Daschle, James Trafficant, and Alan Grayson - all ending up with issues and being drummed out or even expelled.
