Trump: Tariffs on Chinese goods set at 55 percent, US to get rare earth minerals in deal

Source: The Hill

President Trump said Wednesday his administration had reached a tentative agreement on a trade truce with China following talks between the two sides in London.

As part of the agreement, which Trump said was pending his approval and the approval of Chinese President Xi Jinping, China will supply “full magnets, and any necessary rare earths,” Trump said on Truth Social.

Trump indicated the U.S. would impose 55 percent tariffs on Chinese goods, while China would impose a 10 percent tariff on U.S. products. “Likewise, we will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!),” Trump posted, describing the relationship between the two sides as “excellent.”

The announcement comes after top Trump economic officials met in London with their Chinese counterparts. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer represented the Trump administration.

So let’s see Americans will face a 55 percent tax on Chinese goods, less affordability of US goods in China depressing US exports, and the US gets nothing other than the exact same status quo that existed under President Biden? Nice “deal” there ass clown, more like abject surrender in an attempt to save your sorry ass from the destruction of the tariff war you unconstitutionally and illegally started.
Another golden TACO for you! But oh you and your band of criminal thugs did make a whole pile of money from your market manipulation so there’s that! 🤬

China would never agree to something so one-sided. This is Trump just making up numbers to make himself look good again.

So the gaslighting continues...............the numbers don't add up.........55% and 10%...........it's like the state of California condemning his golf course in California having his other resort Bedminster failing it's health department check............ and its smells like 💩💩💩💩💩💩

Is the below $800 exemption back in place, exempting those items from the 55% tariff, or are those items now treated like everything else and tariffed at 55%?

My adopted rule is that any assertion from trump is false, and proof tangible evidence is necessary for any consideration on my part.

He's a degenerate liar.

But in reality, the trade truce – if that’s really what was accomplished this time around – is mostly just a return to the already-tense state of affairs from before April 2. Tariff rates from both countries remain historically high, and significant export restrictions remain in place. The United States has not opened its doors to China’s autos, nor is it going to sell its high-end AI chips anytime soon. And, in Trump’s parlance, China isn’t treating America much more “fairly” after this agreement than it did before.
...
The compounding tariffs create significant trade barriers with America’s second-largest trading partner, raising prices for American businesses and consumers with no easy fixes or clear market alternatives. Some gigantic companies, such as Apple, have complex supply chains that can withstand some of the price pressures. But even Apple, which has said it would ship most US iPhones from India as Chinese tariffs rise, said it would face a $900 million quarterly cost increase because of tariffs – at their current levels, not at the sky-high 145% rate.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Wednesday that U.S. tariff levels on Chinese imports will not change from their current levels, even as a trade deal between Washington and Beijing has yet to be finalized.

Asked on CNBC’s “Money Movers” if the current U.S. tariffs on China are not going to change again, Lutnick replied, “You can definitely say that.”

President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post Wednesday morning that U.S. duties on China will total 55% — but a White House official told CNBC soon after that that figure is not new.

Rather, it comprises the existing 30% blanket U.S. tariffs on China, plus the 25% tariffs on specific products that also were already in place, the official said.
