JERUSALEM (AP) Israel deported activist Greta Thunberg on Tuesday, a day after the Gaza-bound ship she was on was seized by the Israeli military.
Speaking upon arrival in Paris en route to her home country of Sweden, Thunberg called for the release of the other activists who were detained aboard the Madleen. She described a quite chaotic and uncertain situation during the detention.
The conditions they faced are absolutely nothing compared to what people are going through in Palestine and especially Gaza right now, she said. The trip was meant to protest Israeli restrictions on aid to Gazas population of over 2 million people after 20 months of war, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the group behind the journey.
We were well aware of the risks of this mission, Thunberg said. The aim was to get to Gaza and to be able to distribute the aid. She said the activists would continue trying to get aid to Gaza.

(10,709 posts)They have murdered every single man woman and child in Gaza will people finally be happy?
Will people finally be happy when the Mango Mussolini gets to turn Gaza into a resort for billionaires will people finally be happy?
When every baby in Gaza is finally silent...will that be finally be enough?

(2,968 posts)I think this is needed:
More likely she would have been shot by the IDF the moment she set foot in Gaza.

(612 posts)I sincerely hope you aren't ascribing this thought to me:
"savage Palestinians might have had her for lunch"
I never mentioned who or how she could get hurt.
Or who would be responsible, you seem to have that part all covered anyway.
Smart of the Israelis to keep her safely away.
After all if she got hurt, no matter how, it would their fault as the occupier right?
AloeVera
(2,968 posts)It certainly wasn't the IDF you thought would harm her.
But perhaps I was mistaken and you are worried about Gaza'a climate not agreeing with her. Those sunburns CAN be life-threatening!

(10,709 posts)They murdered the crew of the last ship that tried to get aid to Gaza. My guess is that was just a bunch of volunteers and didn't have Anyone famous on board. This boat was different. It would have been harder to make up excuses to murder innocent people when more people were paying attention this time.
Here is the incident from 2010: https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/deadly-israeli-raid-draws-condemnation-419567

(10,709 posts)I gave the news story related to incident specifically because I knew some people would try what you are doing.
They put heavily armed special operators on that boat in a pre-dawn raid and things went bad for the people without guns. It's not anymore complicated than that.

(11,878 posts)Not surprising the guns came into play after being attacked with knives & steel bars.
According to Israel, the soldiers had orders to confront protesters and peacefully convince them to give up, and if not successful, to use non-lethal force to commandeer the ship. They were instructed to use their sidearms only in an emergency when their lives were at risk.

(10,709 posts)So it makes perfect sense if you want to resolve something peacefully to repel onto a moving boat from a helicopters at 4am using special operators.
And just like the United States a country like Israel would never lie about what happened.
EX500rider
(11,878 posts)And there's plenty videos showing how they were armed, and pistols does not meet the definition of heavily armed for special ops troops.

(10,709 posts)And thats ok. Neither of us were there and I don't 100% believe either account of the incident, much less how it's portrayed in the press.
With respect to the Gaza issue, t the end of the day, I find any justification for bombing innocent people, especially women and children, abhorrent.
The refugees in Gaza did not choose their government. Few living in Gaza today were old enough to vote for Hamas 18 years ago.
You don't counter terrorism with terrorism of your own. The people of Gaza have been held in an open air prison, some for their whole lives, by someone that can cut off water or electricity or food at will and have done so in the past.
Not to mention how Palestinians are treated in the West Bank.
I just find it disturbing that a group of people that were forced into ghettos and then harassed and attacked and treated so horribly and then systemically murdered, would be so comfortable treating people like they have treated the innocent people in Gaza (not all people in Gaza are innocent but the majority are). These are women and children, desperately poor people, trapped in a fight not of their own making being made to suffer out of misplaced sense of revenge.
What Hamas did was evil. What the innocent people of Gaza and the West Bank are enduring is no better.
That's all I have to say.
